Red Raiders run through St. Benedict

Baylor saw no need for trickery against St. Benedict. It was all straight ahead.

The Red Raiders used the 1-2 punch of Sam Williams and Nelson Pinkstaff, who combined for 263 rushing yards to pace a 42-10 Division II-AA playoff victory Friday night.

Williams had 166 yards and a score, while Pinkstaff had 97 yards and two touchdowns as Baylor ran for 369 yards as a team.

"We really felt like we wanted to get some confidence," Baylor coach Phil Massey said. "We hadn't been winning the line of scrimmage, so we wanted the big guys to gain some confidence and momentum. Tonight we really knocked them off the football at the point of attack."

Baylor senior Chuck Hudson, the third-string quarterback, got the start and finished with 42 yards passing and a rushing touchdown.

The Red Raiders (7-4) will play next Friday at top-ranked Memphis University School. MUS is ranked 13th nationally.

Baylor held St. Benedict (3-8) to 245 yards of total offense, with 78 coming on a first drive in which the Eagles completed seven passes, including a flea-flicker from Nick Paige to Trey Wilkins.

The Eagles drove the ball to the Baylor 2 but settled for a 22-yard Nick Stengel field goal after a 3-yard loss and two incomplete passes.

Baylor held a 21-3 lead at the break after touchdowns on three of its first four possessions. Pinkstaff scored on runs of 31 and 2 yards, and Hudson had a 1-yard plunge.

Williams added a third-quarter score, then senior Brandon Eaves had a 60-yard interception return.

Freshman Mike Davis capped off the scoring with a 13-yard run on a fourth-down play.

"We had a lot of guys that got to play, so it's a big win," Massey said. "We've got a big week next week, so I told the guys to enjoy this game. MUS is a very good team and it's going to take 100 percent commitment and focus on their part. If we prepare physically, mentally, have no turnovers and eliminate penalties, we believe in these guys."
