Richt says Cox still Georgia's starting quarterback

The senior will be on the field against Tennessee Tech, but favorite receiver A.J. Green won't be.

Joe Cox woke up Monday morning as Georgia's starting quarterback and went to bed in the same role.

Coach Mark Richt announced that Cox will start a ninth consecutive game Saturday when the Bulldogs (4-4) host Tennessee Tech (5-3). The 6-foot-1, 198-pound senior completed 11 of 20 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns last week against Florida, but he was intercepted three times in the 41-17 loss.

"It was unanimous among our staff that Joe gives us the best chance to win, and that's where our focus needs to be," Richt said. "There is still a lot of football left this season. We tell our players to finish the drill, and we are committed to doing that this week and each week the remainder of the season.

"We have faith in Joe that he gives us the best opportunity to do that. At the same time, we do plan on Logan Gray getting some playing time this week at quarterback."

Cox will not have his favorite target Saturday, because sophomore receiver A.J. Green suffered a bruised lung against the Gators and will not play. Sophomore defensive end Justin Houston (elbow) is doubtful, but left tackle Clint Boling (knee) is probable.

Spikes suspended

Florida senior middle linebacker Brandon Spikes was suspended for the first half of Saturday's game against Vanderbilt for reaching into the helmet of Georgia freshman tailback Washaun Ealey and gouging his eyes. Gators coach Urban Meyer announced the suspension Monday morning, and the SEC reviewed and accepted Meyer's action.

"He got too caught up in the emotions of the game," Meyer said. "It was retaliation. My wife said something about it, and so did Coach (Charlie) Strong. Then I saw it and said, 'That's not right.' Brandon needs to know we expect certain things, but he is not a bad guy."

ESPN announcer Mike Golic was irate Monday morning, calling the Spikes incident "one of the biggest chicken-bleep things I've ever seen in my life."

Nov. 14 lineup set

CBS on Monday announced that its noon-3:30 doubleheader on Nov. 14 will contain Tennessee at Ole Miss followed by Florida at South Carolina.

The Alabama at Mississippi State and the Auburn at Georgia games will have 7 p.m. kickoffs and be televised by ESPN or ESPN2. That decision will be made after this Saturday's games.

Kentucky's game at Vanderbilt on Nov. 14 will have a 12:21 kickoff on the SEC Network.
